URGENT SAFETY NOTICE

Elevators installed with more than 4 inches of “gap space” between the hoistway doors and the elevator car doors can pose a serious safety risk. Children may become entrapped in the space and could be seriously injured or killed. This risk can be reduced with the proper installation of space guards at each floor.

What To Do If Stuck In An Elevator

Being a stuck in an elevator is a fear for many.

It is the end of the work day and you take the elevator down from your office floor, but it abruptly stops right before reaching the lobby.  You are now stuck in between floors and there seems to be no way out.  Being stuck in a commercial elevator is an unfortunate circumstance especially for those afraid of heights or suffer from claustrophobia.  Luckily, there are several things you can do to quickly escape a stalled elevator.

Press the “Door Open” Button

It might seem too simple to be true, but many times the button can get jammed so pressing it will open the door right up.  Also try pressing the “door close” button or the button for the floor you are on.  If the door opens, be careful when exiting because it may have stopped just above or below your floor.

Remain Calm

If the door does not open after pressing any of those buttons, try not to panic.  It might not be easy but panicking will only make the situation worse because it will be difficult to think clearly.  Take deep breaths so your body can relax and you can reach out for help.  If there are multiple people in the elevator, try taking deep breaths together so everyone is calm and can think together.

Press The Alarm Button Or Call for Help

Once everyone is calm, push the alarm button and wait for a response from a technician.  In newer elevators, there is a phone button that will alert emergency personnel that there is an issue with the elevator.  This gives the individual the exact location of the building and your elevator.  In the scenario that the call button is broken, call 911 and let the operator know your exact location.

Don’t Try To Escape

Once you have reached someone for help, just wait calmly until they arrive.  The worst thing you can do in this situation is to try to escape.  Attempting to exit a stalled elevator will put your life in more danger.  Just sit down and relax until you are rescued.
